Hip Surgery and Sports Medicine
Specialized Hip Care for Active Patients
Taylor Hobson, MD is a fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine surgeon who provides advanced, joint-preserving care for patients in Tarzana, California and the greater Los Angeles area. The hip is one of the most complex joints in the body, and injuries to the labrum, cartilage, and surrounding soft tissue can sideline athletes and weekend warriors long before osteoarthritis becomes a concern. Dr. Hobson’s approach is to diagnose the underlying cause accurately, exhaust appropriate non-surgical options, and reserve surgery for the patients who will truly benefit.
Dr. Hobson completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Utah and advanced fellowship training in sports medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. During training he served as assistant team physician for the Cleveland Browns (NFL) and the Cleveland Monsters (AHL), and he continues to provide sideline coverage for competitive athletes. That experience informs every appointment, whether the patient is a professional athlete returning to play or a parent hoping to return to a pain-free daily routine.
A Joint-Preservation Philosophy
When hip pain is treated early and accurately, many patients can delay or avoid total hip replacement. Dr. Hobson focuses on identifying structural issues such as femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and labral tears before they cause lasting cartilage damage. He uses hip arthroscopy to treat these conditions through small incisions, with shorter recovery times and an emphasis on preserving the native hip joint whenever possible.
For patients with more advanced arthritis or structural deformities, Dr. Hobson discusses the full range of options, including biologic injections, arthroscopic vs open procedures, and referral for joint replacement when surgery is no longer joint-preserving. The goal is always the right procedure for the right patient at the right time.

What to Expect
Your first visit will include a careful history, a hands-on physical exam, and a review of any imaging you have already had. Dr. Hobson may order additional studies such as an MRI arthrogram, standing radiographs, or a diagnostic injection to clarify the source of pain. From there you will receive a straightforward explanation of what is happening in your hip, what the treatment options are, and what each option would look like for your specific goals.
Non-surgical care, including physical therapy, activity modification, and image-guided injections, is the starting point for most patients. When surgery is the right answer, Dr. Hobson performs the procedure at a nearby accredited surgical facility and stays involved throughout your recovery.
